Copyright, Plagiarism, and Fair Use

What is Copyright?

Copyright is a law that gives ownership over anything that you create. If you created it, you own it.  Copyright laws assure you that ownership and give you  rights to reproduce your work, distribute copies of your work, perform the work and display your work publicly. 

 

What is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism is using or closely imitating something from another author without permission and the representing  it  as your own.  When researching and writing from sources such as the internet, it is required by law to cite a reference and give credit to the original author. 

 

What is Fair Use?

Fair use is the right to use part of a material that is copyrighted.  The user does not have to have permission, but may only use the material for education, commentary or  a parody.
